Ohhhh, as much as I love all my geode cakes, this dramatic beauty is near & dear to my heart. My client wanted a more masculine cake for a 40th birthday, so it wouldn’t look weddingy. (Is that a word? … Continue reading Obsidian & Diamond Geode Cake
I was so excited & thrilled to be asked to create the showstopper centerpiece for the dessert table during the afterparty for the Long Center for the Performing Arts’ 9th Anniversary Party. I’d been looking forward to creating this wedding & groom’s cake for many months. I have a ‘thing’ for owls. My cat Rocky, a Ragdoll, looks so much like an owl in his face! I have wanted a pet owl for a long time, & now with studying the precious little saw whet owls to make this cake, I REALLY want an owl! If you follow my personal page on Facebook, you’ll see lots of owl posts. So when I had a bride & groom request a stacked wood wedding cake with realistic saw whet owl toppers, my heart jumped … Continue reading Precious Owl Wedding Cake at Canyon Of The Eagles
Cowboy boot cake! I actually remembered to take a few pictures as I worked on this cake. Unfortunately, I missed a few steps, but still I thought you would enjoy seeing at least some of the process. So it’s not really a full tutorial, just a few tips & steps. This cake is challenging in several ways: –The heel is elevated with space between it & the forefoot, so the cake must be suspended at least partially in air. –The toe of a real boot curves up off the floor –The boot shaft is so tall, skinny & top-heavy, & … Continue reading Creating a Cowboy Boot Cake
Five Weddings in 3 days! And each was unique in its design. First, we have this romantic peach confection in ruffles, lace & floral print. This was for a small wedding in a gorgeous estate on Lake Travis. The setting was amazing. All 3 tiers were Vanilla Ice Ice Baby cake with a ‘cherry cheesecake’ filling, special request from the bride. Which is EVIL! I’ve been sneaking the leftovers almost every night since. Seriously, one of the best fillings we’ve ever made. This one’s going on the menu permanently! The top tier is wrapped in wafer paper printed on my … Continue reading Busy Wedding Cake Weekend!
This was the setting for a truly storybook wedding at the gorgeous One World Theater on Bee Caves Rd . I was so honored to be asked to create the wedding cake for this amazing wedding & venue. The bride was so easygoing & liked EVERYTHING I showed her, so we had to narrow down the styles she liked & then blend them into a harmonious whole. The colors of the wedding were peach & turquoise, with natural greens brought in from the succulents heavily interspersed in the decor. So we settled on a cake with a touch of the … Continue reading Gorgeous Wedding at One World Theater in Austin, TX
For the most part, weddings are still traditional affairs, even with personal touches here & there to match the couple’s personalities. But occasionally, tradition is thrown to the wind & ALL the personality shines right through! Those are so much fun to do. Wedding cakes have in many ways become a canvas upon which the couple paints their own personal story. The cake has always been the star of the reception, & the main thing all the guests are dying to see when they arrive. Who doesn’t love an amazing showstopper wedding cake? But it’s even more so now, … Continue reading Crazy Fun Wedding Cake
This is a display wedding cake that I created to showcase some wonderful fresh cutting-edge techniques that prove a simple white cake can be absolutely stunning with rich textural contrast. It’s all dummy cakes, so no yummy flavors this time! White on White Textural Wedding Cake, Austin, TX That bottom tier is a 10″ round, & it took me & one of my Cake Minions 4 hours each working together to finish 3/4 of it, & then I spent another 3 hours finishing the rest by myself. There are over 400 individually cut & placed wafer paper pieces on … Continue reading All-White Wedding Cake in Cutting Edge Textures
Oh my goodness, I’m so honored right now. I created this cake out of pure love as a gift for my amazing mother in law. Not only did I win the husband lottery when I met my Soul Mate, Michael, but I also won the mother in law lottery too! His mother, Sarah, is one of the sweetest kindest humans I have ever met, with a real servant’s heart. She’s always out in the community helping people in need through her church, & she raised an incredible son, too! She has taken me into her heart from the first day … Continue reading My Geode Cake Won Satin Ice Cake of the Month for October 2016!!!
I’ve been so very blessed since we moved to Austin & I relaunched Cakes ROCK!!! here, literally starting over from scratch, knowing not a soul, & flying by the seat of my powdered-sugar-covered yoga pants. Not only is the market … Continue reading A Very Special Snowflake (Cake)
“I’m not a fan of fondant” “I hate fondant. Calling all Wizards, Mudbloods, & Muggles! I have been wanting to make a Sorting Hat cake for a long time. I think he’s so funny! I was booked to my eyeballs this weekend, but I took on this short notice request purely because it was the first opportunity I’d had & I wanted to make him more than I wanted to sleep. Ha! I created him out of dark chocolate cake with white chocolate buttercream filling, & blended up all the scraps I trimmed off into cake pop dough. I used the cake pop dough to create the top … Continue reading Harry Potter Sorting Hat Cake
